Who is Mae Mefford?
In 1940, Mae Mefford and her husband built the Missouri Tavern to serve as not only a bar, but their home, a convenience store and a gas station. Mae, from South Dakota built their home and tavern along Highway 12 outside of Madison Wisconsin. The name was given in honor of her husband, “Missouri Al” who was originally from St. Louis and passed away in 1964.
For over 60 years, Mae ran the Tavern by herself as the sole owner, operator, and bartender until the age of 101. The stories of Mae and her tavern live on through patrons that still visit the bar today. They tell of her not allowing anyone to swear inside her bar and if they did, she would go over to the piano and play hymns. She was also a helpful person and heavily involved in the community and church. Mae will always be a part of the Missouri Tavern.
